Cody Kent’s journey as a writer is not built on theory or abstraction. It is shaped by lived experience, family influence, and a quiet determination to move forward regardless of circumstance.
Born and raised in Decatur, Alabama, Kent grew up in a household led primarily by women. His great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother played central roles in his upbringing, supported by an uncle who stepped in to provide the guidance of a father figure during his early years. From them, he learned values that continue to define both his personal life and his creative work. Kindness, resilience, and responsibility were not abstract ideas in his home. They were practiced daily, often in difficult situations.
One of the most lasting lessons came later in life from his father, who told him, “Life is what you make it.” Kent adopted that mindset and has carried it into every decision he has made since.
That philosophy was tested during one of the most difficult periods of his life, when he experienced homelessness with his wife and daughter. Rather than allowing that moment to define him negatively, Kent used it as a turning point. It became a source of motivation, pushing him to rebuild and to ensure stability for his family moving forward. Today, he often reflects on that time not with regret, but with clarity. It reinforced the idea that hardship, while unavoidable, can shape direction if met with persistence.
Family remains central to Kent’s life and work. While he acknowledges that disagreements and differing perspectives are part of any family dynamic, he maintains a strong sense of loyalty. His commitment is simple. When his family calls, he shows up. That same sense of dependability is mirrored in his writing, where relationships often carry emotional weight and realism.
His wife, in particular, has been a steady source of support throughout his journey. Her presence has helped anchor him during both personal challenges and creative pursuits, allowing him to stay focused on his long-term goals.
Kent’s writing process reflects a blend of imagination and reality. The initial idea for his book came from a dream, but the structure and depth of the story were developed through research and real-life influence. Many elements within his work are inspired by situations he has observed or experienced, giving his stories a grounded and relatable quality. Even when exploring fictional or imaginative settings, his goal is to reflect emotional truths that readers can recognize.
Interestingly, Kent begins his creative process at the end. He develops the conclusion first, establishing a clear destination before allowing the story to unfold naturally. This approach gives his work a sense of direction while still leaving room for organic development. While he enjoys building scenes and visual descriptions, particularly action sequences, he finds dialogue to be the most challenging aspect of writing. Still, he works through it with the same persistence that defines other areas of his life.
Outside of writing, Kent is deeply connected to outdoor photography. What began as a long-held interest became a serious hobby after his father-in-law gifted him his first camera. Since then, photography has become both a creative outlet and a source of inspiration. Walking through his hometown, capturing candid moments and new locations, often provides the visual foundation for scenes in his books. His broader interests include hiking, sports, swimming, and drawing, all of which reflect a preference for movement, observation, and creativity.
Professionally, I work part-time in a family food restaurant as a cook or server, a role that requires discipline, precision, and consistency. That same work ethic carries into his writing routine. His days typically begin early with a workout, followed by dedicated writing time before heading into work. He performs best in environments where there is energy around him, often writing with soul jazz or 90s music playing in the background.
Kent’s journey has not been without serious health challenges. Over a six-year period, he experienced multiple strokes, an experience that further reinforced his urgency to write and share his story. While he admits that high-pressure situations are not his strength, he is committed to seeing things through to completion. For him, success is not defined by perfection, but by finishing what he starts.
Looking ahead, Kent has clear ambitions. In the short term, he aims to become a bestselling author and to create stories that evoke genuine emotional responses in readers. Long term, he envisions opening a restaurant on the Miami strip and traveling full-time with his wife and daughter, writing from different parts of the world.
At the core of his vision is a simple goal: to leave behind stories that inspire. He wants readers to see that no matter where they come from, difficult days do not define the whole journey. There are moments of light, humor, and hope, even in the darkest times.
Kent is currently developing his work into a five-book series, with plans to expand even further. As his writing continues to evolve, one thing remains consistent. His stories are not just imagined. They are lived, observed, and shaped by a life that understands both struggle and possibility.
